The Fastermind event will be at Nevisons Leap pub, Pontefract on Sunday 29th December at 1 PM. The line up of players and choice of subjects is absolutely superb. Check this out:
Player | Subject |
---|---|
Colin Foster | Edward of Caernarfon aka Edward II of England |
Peter Askins | UK Number Ones 1960 – 1989 |
Martin Pampel | Tom and Jerry 1940 to 1958 |
Julia Kidd | A Song Of Ice And Fire Books by George RR Martin |
Sam Roberts | The World's Strongest Man franchise 1977 – 2013 |
Mike Foden | Steely Dan |
Keith Marshall | Mammals |
Daniel Fullard | Eurovision 1990 - 2013 |
The topics will be asked in the order above. The fifteen questions will be worth two points each, one away for an incorrect interruption, but each competitor will score double (ie 4) on their own subject for a correct answer.
Will be played according to "Preston Rules". In this version all players have a vested intrest in every question, and points will be lost for incorrect answers weather the question is finished or not. Once a question is asked:
The first player to 100 points will be Fastermind 2013
It is an expensive £20 a person, but all monies will go to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), a charity that appears to be the one where the highest proportion of donations go to the coal face. For each entrant I will add £5, therefore the event will raise £200.
This is such a tough one to call, especially in that the Preston Format may completely queer previous form. I am pretty sure that great quiz knowledge will not alone be sufficient. I reckon that strategy and luck will play a significant role, but if I were competing, the tool I would most desire is sustained concentration, to be able to forget the missed ones and get on with the game, secure in the knowledge that a lot of the questions will be getable on the key words.
Player | Predicted scores | Expert Summary! | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
Joker | Other | Total | ||
Colin | 52 | 34 | 86 | Unknown Quantity: Round of the week on Mastermind this year with a total score of 26 in the first round. Very creditable pool win in Mimr, I am sure the knowledge will be sufficient but it will be tough for Colin to adapt to the pitch of questions and perhaps the buzzers |
Peter | 40 | 40 | 80 | 5 town quiz league top scorer. If Peter gets stuck in he will be a contender. I reckon he is too nice to buzz aggresively enough or use gamesmanship to get those vital edges. If he had a snort of coke first he would win! Come on Pete! |
Martin | 56 | 38 | 94 | Fresh from his amazing performance on Show Me The Telly, Martin has a great subject that he should be able to dominate, amazing telly knowledge great film and pop, and the experience of two LSQ wins. If he can maintain his attention to what will be a long quiz in a tough environment he will be in the shake up. |
Julia | 60 | 16 | 76 | On her way to Oxford to do a pHd, Julia is my choice to do best in her specialist subject. Whilst relative quiz inexperience will count against her, the fact that she is the only female and the only person under 30 ish (by a chalk) may just allow her to nab some unique answers in part two whilst the old men are divvying up the chesnuts, and who knows. If we had this competition 100 times Julia would win several of them. Naturally I want Julia to win. |
Sam | 52 | 38 | 90 | Along with Martin another brilliant performance on Show Me The Telly, Sam has picked a topic where he has the potential to clean up. If he can nail the tough ones in his first round, nick a couple from perhaps Kieth and Daniel, and stay strong in round two he might just sneak in |
Mike | 56 | 44 | 100 | No offense to anybody, but if all players play to the best of their ability Mike would be my marginal favourite to win. I percieve Mike to be a swing player, who when concentrating on questions instead of quips has the breadth and depth of knowledge to take most of what will be thrown out |
Keith | 48 | 48 | 96 | Keith ended up as the lowest handicapped player (-3) this year, his last performance in Durham being imperious. My heart says Keith |
Daniel | 56 | 42 | 98 | Daniel has not won a LightSpeed yet. If he has saved himself for this it would not surprise me in the slightest. He has had an amazing season of the Quizzing circuit and taken some notable scalps. I reckon a snort from Peter's stash might give him the edge he needs, but I know he will have studied all this year's games and learned enough to make him a genuine contender |
