Round One

The line up for the first ever QU12

The first question was answered correctly by Simon Curtis with "Whoopi Goldberg". In terms of of game play it was the best thing since 15 to 1 grand finals, with nearly 50 questions in twelve minutes. Things fell according to seeding; Newbies Chris, Phil and Kate had a harsh introduction to buzzer quizzing as Mark Kerr went on a points rampage, Pat Gibson just hoovering up those ones from beyond the edge of common knowledge (e.g. Question master - "Dylan Mills.." buzz, Pat - "Dizzy Rascal?"), And Diane Hallagan, Steve Stenson, Lee Warburton and Simon Curtis keeping up the pressure. Barry Simmons, on his own admission took his time to get started and was happy to get "the three graces" well into the latter part of the game to hoist him out of the danger zone. Rookie of the week Mike Steer just did enough to keep himself clear at the end whilst Don Purdie just didn't

Round Two

The Gameplay was awesome, but the excitement... How Mark Kerr did not qualify will remain alongside Ley Lines, Stonehenge, Lord Lucan, The Mary Celeste and the popularity of Big Brother as one of the mysteries of our time. A huge six on Ludunum (Lyon) opened up his innings, but somehow the game struck. An impressive Mike Steer gained the first twelve points to qualify for the final, after a quiet start Diane Hallagan sat back to realise that either Mark, Barry or Pat were going to be knocked out. Barry Simmons was next through, leaving Pat and Mark on the edge. Mark blew four points on Jade Goody.. Pat blew six points on Freddie Mercury, Simon was one big hit away. The final question of the round went like this:

For six points, The first publicly available description of what was a document first mentioned on the Internet by Tim Berners-Lee in late 1991?
For Five Ponts, In 2000, it became an international standard (ISO/IEC 15445:2000).

Mark - Buzz "The World Wide Web?"
This was incorrect and Mark lost five points, putting him out of the question

For four points, the original document describes 22 elements comprising the initial, relatively simple design, thirteen of these elements still exist in common use
For three points, more than and less than tags bracket instructions

Pat - Buzz "Hyper Text Markup Language"
Which was the answer, for two points and qualification in last place for the most awesome quizzer this side of anybody.

(Incidentally the final unread parts of the question were:
2 P starts a paragraph, BR breaks a line and B emboldens, whereas a prior slash cancels the command
1 What is the language most commonly used to write web pages
Answer: HTML / Hyper Text Mark-up Language
)

Round Three

The strange thing about this last round is the way the three lives seem like a safety net to a player. In practice I have discovered how fragile security is in round three. Mike Steer discovered the same losing two early lives and being shackled for the remainder of the game, (I thought Ella Fitzgerald was a fantastic answer though). An observer pointed out that Pat Gibson doesn't seem to get that many, he just does... I guess that is the mark of an expert, making it look easy. For about one minute it looked like Diane was going to get back in the game, bringing herself two with two of Pat sitting on eleven, but the final question and Pat's response was reminiscent of Roger Federer's overhead crosscourt smash to beat the great Rafael Nadal one week ago
Give both finalists in the 2006 and 2007 Wimbledon Men's singles championship

Pat won.

The film

The sound quality was not great, the presenter was rubbish, the lighting was OK but not perfect, Peter Brook is a smooth professional, totally competent and seamless announcer who makes Roger Tilling sound like Fred Elliot (Roger, I love ya really), the scoring was OK but needs a couple of tweaks, the camera work was OK to good, the editing OK to good, I hope (and think) the content was good, but the contestants. If this show is to be content and contestant led then it is "mission accomplished". On the day I was concerned about stuff, but having watched the takes I am flabergasted. It's brilliant. Now I may be biased 'cos I love quizzes and despair at the current batch on TV, but woah - If the shaowe lasts an hour that is a question every 30 seconds, and some of those questions are long. Jaw dropping speed, great humour and spirit, Mind boggling knowledge and Drama of the highest order. Bring it ON

Next event: Merseyside, 22nd July 2007 - Not at the Victoria, not on the 23rd - Stay Tuned

Borders Bookstore in the Middle of Leeds, this Tuesday the 17th July 2007 between 6 and 9 there will be a quiz. I will bring the buzzers.
