QU12 round four was, as predicted, a victory for the Awesome Diane Hallagan, but not in the style expected. There are two Dianes; the one who was the first to qualify for the third part of Round One, and the one which despondently guessed at a Scottish place name at Liverpool. Today we were blessed by the former, who won all three parts despite the best efforts of Mike Abbott and some handy but somewhat shell-shocked local competitors.
Part One saw Diane and Mike build up leads which always kept them safe. The dodgy places were, as usual, down the table, and it was Clare Miller who was unfortunate to suffer the cut.
The most unlucky player of the day had to be Jenny Arnold who zapped in a five pointer on the first answer of round two, but then fell to The Curse of Teflon by making great guesses at Duran Duran and Abysinnia whilst the answers required were Talk Talk and Persia. (Naturally the luckiest player was Matthew Arnold by virtue of having Jenny for a lifetime companion).
In the last two parts, Seamus McCarthy went on rolls, twice hitting Hat Tricks of answers, but it was the experience of Diane and Mike in Part Three which saw the latter shoot back to within two points of victory prior to Diane boldly executing the coup de grace with a Crash (Of Rhinos). Diane was most unfortunate not to be the winner of Round One at Pontefract, but with her place in the final secure, she has a justified reward for patience. She stated “The only problem is I can't compete in subsequent rounds prior to the final” - She's lucky, I can't compete in any! (Perhaps that is my good fortune). (No it is not – it is yours).
With Diane's confirmation in the final, her odds have been slashed, along with Kevin Ashman's, who yesterday confirmed his attending the South East event (which will be held one week before the previously advertised date). The altered odds are below. The competition would not have been complete without Kevin. Thanks to the Winnall Wizard, the competition has been turned from the best idea into, as far as I can see, the very best Open Quiz competition held in this country, let alone TV quiz. Ever.
