Following the runaway success of QU12, “the quiz for quizzers”, we are overjoyed to invite participants for the Music and Team events in the first half of 2008
Four Heats plus the final will take place on:
- Heats 1: Sunday March 16th: North East: Grange Moor, Yorkshire (In conjunction with Steve Burdin's National Pop Quiz).
- Heats 2: Sunday April 20th: South West/Midlands
- Heats 3: Sunday May 18th: North West: Victoria Hotel, Rainhill
- Heats 4 and Finals: Sunday June 22nd: South East/London: Kidlington
On each date a round of both QU12 Music and QU12 Team will be held, enabling the competitors to make it through to the final.
QU12 Music
will follow approximately the same structure as QU12 apart from that there will be three eliminations in each of the three parts of any given round, i.e. 12 people will contest part one, 9 part two and 6 part three, with 3 people qualifying for the final.
The nature of music in the context of the quiz will be 90% what might be termed popular music. Clasical, Jazz and World music as well as theory will be included, but the focus will be more “Buzzcocks” than “Counterpoint”
Rules:
- All games are played by individuals on buzzers.
- All rounds are started with a blank score sheet.
- Tie breaker: Head to head, single question appropriate to round.
- If three or more contest a tiebreaker: Correct answer = Progress to next round, Incorrect answer passes on and eliminates from game.
- If two contest a tiebreaker: Correct answer = Progress to round 2, Incorrect answer passes over.
- The question masters decision is final (see "objections", below)
Part One: Light Speed
- Question Nature: Quick fire buzzer, with verbal questions getting easier as the round progresses
- Outcome: Top nine after twelve minutes progress to Part Two
- Players: 12
- Scoring: Correct answer = 1 point, Incorrect answer passes on and carries a penalty of loss of half accumulated points.
Part Two: The Dirty Dozen
- Question Nature: Quick fire buzzer, with verbal questions asked incrementally
- Outcome: Top six after twelve questions progress to Part Three
- Players: 9
- Scoring:
- Correct answer on first clue = 6 points
- Correct answer on second clue = 5 points
- Correct answer on third clue = 4 points
- Correct answer on fourth clue = 3 points
- Correct answer on fifth clue = 2 points
- Correct answer on sixth clue = 1 point
- NEGATIVE POINTS FOR WRONG ANWERS APPROPRIATE TO VALUE (e.g. minus 6 for wrong answer on first clue)
Part Three: QU12
- Question Nature: Quick fire buzzer, records will be played at random. Identification of both title and artist is required for one point. If either artist or title is correctly identified there is no life penalty. Failure to correctly identify both artist and title after a buzz will be deemed an incorrect answer (see below).
- Outcome: First to twelve points wins round, second and third to 12 points qualify for final
- Players: 6
- Scoring: Correct answer = 1 point. Three incorrect answers and player is eliminated.
“Pardon”
If a player is close with an answer, but not quite right, the questionmaster may consider he has perhaps not heard correctly, in which case he may ask the competitor to repeat their answer, e.g.
Competitor: “Ant Music by Adam Ant”
Quizmaster: “Pardon?”
Competitor: “Ant Music by Adam and the Ants”
Quizmaster: “That's what I thought you said – One point!”
Objections
Any player may object to a question, answer or score within one question of completion. If the objection is overruled that player's right to objection is then forfeit.
