Round Six Review

The Elephant In The Room

Curious header for a quiz review I know. Whatever...

It was a fairly late venue change to The Salutation, but I hope we can go back there again. 15 minutes walk from the station, the beer was decent, the food was good, the room was perfect and the quiz was just brilliant!

Martin Pampel made it all the way up from Manchester by train (That's another £60), Daniel Fullard from Sunderland, and Mike Foden and Keith Marshall are three good reasons to come to the north-east.

From the get go the quizzes were incredibly well contested, I'm not going to tell you the results here straight away, as ususual you should really watch the films. A mark of how close it was that three people could have won on the last buzz of the first game, which had twenty minutes playing time. Not only was this epic game close, but I made a mistake on the scoring which meant that the 2nd and 3rd places had to be subsequently reversed (the scores being 23 - 24) consequently altering the final positions significantly. (Look at the second film on 2 minutes and 25 seconds to see the original error - look carefully at the times for the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory surname question).

There are six films, containing five games (the first is a two-parter)

Best Answers

Martin's answer on A Streetcar Named Desire, Keith's Ongulito mammal, but the winner... "Chinese wispa"!

NB. Part two of the first game has already had 50 views after a couple of days. Also sorry they took a while to post, but half way through the second edit I had a computer (A Medion less than a month old) go, I think their word is, "kaput" on me, so I eventually had to get and re-install a new one and start again with the editing. You will notice less zooming in, and actually more space in between the questions. I think there may be a few more 'unaswered' questions left in as well. That certainly makes for easier and faster editing, a neater final cut and I don't know, it may be as good or better a result. I do hate to hear myself trying to be funny though. It's pathetic!

Another name on the winner's board, and how! It seems like the handicapping is clenching the games up, which is terrific 'cos that adds value to all play, mistakes become costlier and those mega hits make all the difference between winning and losing. Or would do if Keith hadn't been so brilliant today - how composed was he towards the end?

The best example of how critical single points are were indicated by the mistake I made on not offering Martin the "Bucket" question in round one. The subsequent adjustment relegated Mike (who won last time out) to the back of the grid, and promoted Martin onto the podium, a lucrative source of points.

Daniel Fullard had such an awesome result at the British Quiz Championships a few days ago, coming 28th and beating some massively good quizzers. He has been invited onto Brain of Britain and we all share his joy, pride and excitement. Read the threads at the Quiz discussion group on facebook, especially the ones on TV quiz, and there is no evidence, at the time of writing, whatsoever of a better open and 'fair' quiz committed to audio/visual media than this, on that site or anywhere else. The quiz that dare not speak its name. A beautiful big fat elephant sat in every quiz player's kitchen! This is not dissing the Quizzing events or Brain of Britain, they are very good, I love listening to BOB. But this... It is really something! Thanks so much to the players who have joined in so far, and here's to those to come.
